Are You A Business Owner Or Does Your Business Own You?
Running a business isn’t always easy, I get it! But here’s the thing: you don’t have to do everything on your own.
Maybe you landed on this blog because you’re wondering if it’s finally time to hire a Virtual Assistant. Or maybe you’re just exploring new ways to streamline and grow your business. Either way, you’re in the right place.
I’ve put together a quick quiz designed to help you pause and reflect. As you go through it, be honest with yourself, take a clear look at where things stand, and identify what might need to change. By the end, you’ll have a better sense of your next steps and how to move forward with more clarity.
Good luck and see you on the other side!
Instructions:
As you work through this quiz, answer each statement honestly. Rate yourself on a scale of 0–2:

1 = Somewhat true
2 = Very true
At the end, add up your total score. Then scroll down to find out my input on what your results say about you as a business owner, along with my recommendations for your next steps.
The “Do You Need a Virtual Assistant?” Quiz
1. You spend more nights burning the midnight oil to finish up tasks that are long overdue.
2. Your off days have now become your “catch up” days. Your inbox is flooded with unread emails, your social media accounts have days-worth of unchecked notifications, and you have yet to organize next month’s meetings into your calendar.
3. You no longer have space for downtime. Suddenly, it’s difficult to find time for the gym, spend a day with the family or a night out with your friends, read even a single chapter of a book, meditate to the soothing sounds of rain falling in the background… perhaps sleep?
4. You can’t find time to engage in activities that specifically reset your mind: walking in nature, listening to your favorite podcast, watching reruns of Will & Grace or Judge Mathis, gardening.
5. Deadlines to finish tasks and projects are becoming more and more unrealistic and unbearable.
6. You no longer respect your own boundaries—meaning you struggle to call it a day when tasks aren’t fully finished, instead of allowing yourself to pause and pick them up the next day.
7. You haven’t found any inspiration lately on creative ways to take your business to the next level.
8. Your workload has become so heavy that you haven’t even had the time to read an article like “50 Simple Ways to Revamp Your Business” or watch a YouTube video from your favorite creator in your craft.
9. The projects that you do manage to actually complete are no longer up to par to the quality of work that you’re used to producing.
10. You find it difficult to ask for help because you want things done your way. And to justify feeling this way, you tell yourself, “This is my business and therefore, my vision. So why delegate someone else to handle tasks if they’re not going to do it the same, exact way that I would?”
Points 0-7: Way to go! You’ve got things under control!
Well look at you! Not only are you a business owner, but you are the MASTER! You’ve figured out a formula that not only works for you but also serves you. A lot of business owners fall victim to becoming flooded and tied down with so many tasks and obligations, but not you! You’ve managed to maintain a balanced work-life.
There’s not much to say here other than, “If it’s not broken then don’t fix it!” Continue doing what you’re doing!
But hey! Even though you may not need a Virtual Assistant, perhaps you know someone who does. So send them this way!
Points 8-14: Staying afloat, but barely. It might be a good idea to start considering a Virtual Assistant.
It's no fun living paycheck to paycheck, and neither is living just day to day. What do I mean by this? Just like living paycheck to paycheck limits your freedom financially, operating day-to-day without breathing room limits your freedom personally.
You may not feel overwhelmed right now, but as the load continues to grow—or the longer you carry it—something will eventually give. Don’t wait until you reach that breaking point to recognize it’s time for a change!
Now is the time to be proactive—start exploring ways to reclaim your time! Whether that means delegating tasks or researching Virtual Assistants, just know that getting ahead of the problem now will save you from burnout later!
Points 15-20: Stop what you're doing and hire a Virtual Assistant now!
As the old saying goes, “Choose your battles wisely”—and this battle just isn't for you. Stop what you’re doing, drop the pencil & pad, and slowly back away from the computer. Woo-sah for about 3 minutes. Regather yourself. And call it quits for the day. When the day breaks tomorrow, come back with a fresh perspective and start exploring your options for a Virtual Assistant.
You’ve done a lot on your own, and that’s something to respect! But now it’s time to create leverage by bringing in support. You may prefer things done your way, and that’s natural, but great leadership also means knowing when to trust others and step back. You don’t have to carry everything yourself. Let someone step in, take ownership of certain tasks, and lighten your load. You might even discover new perspectives and better ways of doing things along the way!
At the end of the day, strong business owners make smart, timely decisions. So go ahead and make the move!
So, how’d you do? Do you feel confident that a Virtual Assistant isn’t necessary right now? Or have deadlines and workload started to pile up to the point where getting support might actually be the best next step? Or maybe you fall somewhere in between? Wherever you landed, I hope this quiz helped bring some clarity and perspective to where you are right now in your business journey. My goal is simply to help you avoid reaching the point of overwhelm—where you’re so stretched thin that you barely recognize yourself in the process.
Before you take care of business, take care of yourself first!
Again, being a business owner is already hard enough and a heavy crown to wear, so don’t subject yourself to doing it all alone. When your mind becomes so weighed down, what freedom does it have to be creative and innovative? What open path do fresh ideas have to easily pour in? And how can you gain the discernment to clearly see solutions that are right in front of you?
Give yourself the grace to get support when you need it. Creating space to breathe isn’t a weakness—it’s what allows better ideas, clearer thinking, and stronger decision-making to come through. Your future self will thank you!
